*updated* No bin collections took place in Wirral today (Monday 5 January) due to the snow and icy conditions making it unsafe for our crews to operate.
Some council areas will shut down, with others offering limited opening hours over the festive period meaning that some services will be unavailable at that time.
The council’s waste collection partner, Biffa, have use of the electric vehicle until 26th November and will be testing it in a range of environments across the borough.
Wirral was one of 52 councils that successfully applied to the Chewing Gum Task Force and received £27,500 in funding for use solely to clean gum off pavements and prevent further gum littering.
Wirral Council is working closely in partnership with other councils across the Liverpool City Region (LCR), as well as Merseyside Recycling & Waste Authority (MRWA), to introduce new weekly food waste collections to much of the region.
In the first two weeks of the films and flexible plastics trial, 4,200 blue bags have been received and have gone through the process of being turned into reusable materials.
The next step for Wirral Council appointing a contractor to operate its Recycling, Waste and Street Cleansing service from August 2027 has been reached today with the publishing of ‘Invitation to Tender’ documents.
At the next meeting of the Environment, Climate Emergency and Transport Committee, members will consider an update on the council’s new five-year Waste and Street Cleansing Strategy – entitled ‘Rethinking Waste: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Recover 2025-2030’.
