Birkenhead Primary school win competition to promote clean air

Year 4 children at The Priory Parish C E Primary School have won a competition to create a banner to help raise awareness about the importance of cleaner air around our schools. 

The Birkenhead school’s banner, which featured slogans like ‘Don’t let our future go up in smoke’ and ‘Go green, breathe clean’, won £250 for their school. 

Year 4 teacher Miss Waine, whose class created the artwork, said: “As a school we are passionate about creating a safe environment for our school community, so we are grateful to Wirral Council for sharing our mission. 

“Our ECO club work hard maintaining our pond, building birdhouses, tending to the bug-hotel, growing our own vegetables and planting new flowers around our school. Most of our children walk or cycle to school. We walk to Europa Pools for swimming lessons as well as to local trips in Birkenhead Park for example. 

“We were delighted to take part in this Clean Air Day project. The children had lots of fun creating their posters and enjoyed presenting their work in assembly, to help educate the other children on the benefits of having clean air.” 

The school plans to spend their winnings on resources for their ECO club, plants for the garden and books on climate change. 

Headteacher Gregg Edwards said: “Keeping the environment clean is one of our biggest priorities and the whole school loved getting involved in different projects throughout Green Month.”
