Mayor raises the Rainbow Flag to mark the start of Wirral Pride this weekend
The Rainbow flag has been raised at Wallasey Town Hall to celebrate the start of Wirral Pride, which takes place in the Victoria Quarter of New Brighton tomorrow afternoon (9 August).
The Mayor of Wirral, Councillor Brian Kenny, said:
Although raising the flag might be is a simple thing in itself, it is a clear and powerful symbol that we see - and support - our LGBTQ+ communities.
Wirral’s annual Pride event is a fantastic celebration of inclusion and solidarity and has quickly established itself as one of the summer highlights in New Brighton. I am really looking forward to seeing everyone down there on Saturday.

Now in its fourth year, Wirral Pride has grown year-on-year as a celebration of local LGBTQ+ communities. The day-long programme of activities and performances starts with a muster and speeches by community members from the stage at 12 noon, followed by a continuous programme of live music, DJ Sets, and dance groups.
More than 40 stalls will be offering a wide range of goods and services across the Victoria Quarter, and local community group, Charlotte’s Brightside, will be providing children’s activities throughout the day.
A fun dog show, hosted by People’s Animal Welfare Society, will also be raising funds to support rescued pets in the Rightway carpark from 12.30pm.
The founder of Wirral Pride, Jamie Lee Carter, said:
It's been incredible to see the event grow each year but it's been even more special to see people being safe and free to express themselves without fear, this year especially gives our community and our allies a chance to stand proud and say that Wirral isn't a place for hate.
If you're heading to Wirral Pride please consider walking or use public transport if you can; New Brighton Station is just a five-minute walk away and there are plenty of bus routes to choose from - plan your journey on the Merseytravel website.
A number of road closures and temporary parking restrictions will be in place around the Victoria Road area in New Brighton from 7.00am to 7.00pm, so please follow the traffic signs. If you do need to drive, please park considerately.
