With sunny days and warmer temperatures continuing, residents are being encouraged to enjoy everything Wirral has to offer while helping to keep themselves, others and the environment safe.

Whether you're spending the day at the beach, exploring one of our parks or enjoying time outdoors with family and friends, a little preparation can go a long way. Keeping a bottle of water handy, wearing sun cream and seeking shade during the hottest part of the day can help you stay well when temperatures rise.

Wirral's coastline attracts thousands of visitors during the summer months, but it's important to remember that the sea can be unpredictable whatever the weather. Fast-moving tides and areas of mud can quickly catch people out, so checking tide times before heading out and keeping children within sight are simple ways to stay safe.

People should also be aware that even on the hottest days, the sea can remain much colder than expected. Water temperatures are often only around 12°C to 16°C, and entering cold water suddenly can cause cold water shock, affecting breathing, movement and the ability to stay afloat. If you're planning to swim, choose designated swimming areas where possible and never enter the water alone.

If someone gets into difficulty in the water, remember the RNLI's Float to Live advice. Tilt your head back, stay calm, control your breathing and gently move your hands and legs to help keep yourself afloat.

Visitors are also being asked to help protect our coastline by taking litter home or using bins provided. Not only does this help keep beaches looking their best, but it also reduces the risk to wildlife and makes our outdoor spaces more enjoyable for everyone.

For those planning a summer BBQ, extra care should be taken to avoid fires and injuries. BBQs should never be left unattended, and disposable BBQs must be allowed to cool fully before being disposed of. They should never be placed in bins while still hot or left behind on beaches, grassland or in parks.

By taking a few sensible precautions and showing pride in our beaches, parks and green spaces, we can all enjoy the sunshine safely while helping to keep Wirral looking its best.
