Four Wirral residents have been recognised in the King's New Year honours list.

They are among almost 1,200 award recipients from across the UK to be recognised for their outstanding achievements or their contribution to society.

The recipients and their awards are:

MBE (Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire)

  • Tony Jones of New Brighton, who as a volunteer for the RNLI and as Chair of New Brighton Community Centre, was recognised for services to maritime safety and to the community in New Brighton. Tony is also a ward Councillor for New Brighton.

BEM (British Empire Medal)

  • Richard Glegg Turner of Thurstaston for services to the community in Thurstaston.

  • Dr. Nunzia Bertali of Birkenhead for services to UK-Italy Relations and the community in the North West. Dr Bertali is also a Freewomen of Wirral after being awarded the borough’s highest honour in 2019.

  • Janice Monty of Birkenhead, who as a trustee and (and lately Chief Executive Officer) of Shaftesbury Youth Club and lately Chief Executive Office of Tranmere Rovers in the Community, was recognised for service to the community.

I am immensely proud of the local residents who have been recognised in the King’s New Year Honours. Their dedication, selflessness, and commitment to making a difference in our communities – whether through maritime safety, youth work, international ties, or local volunteering – is truly inspiring. They really do represent the best of Wirral.

These honours are a testament to the positive impact they have had on countless people.

The Mayor of Wirral, Councillor Brian Kenny

Honours are announced twice a year - once at New Year and then again in June, for the King’s official birthday.

Medals are presented to the recipients at events organised by the Central Chancery of the Orders of Knighthood. The ceremonies are held about 30 times a year at Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle and the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh. They are hosted by the King or senior members of the Royal Family.

The awards are made by the King following recommendations by the prime minister or senior government ministers. Members of the public can also recommend people for an award. More information on how to nominate someone is available on the Government website.
