Summer Loving: 10 things to do in Wirral this Summer

Summer has officially arrived and there’s loads going on in Wirral, whether you’re a fan of the great outdoors, a culture vulture or you just want to get active. Or perhaps you want to find fun-filled activities for your kids over the next few months?

Here are 10  ideas of ways you and your kids can keep busy this Summer.

Summer Loving - having a blast

1. Anyone for tennis? Enjoying Wimbledon? Get yourself down to one of the 36 newly refurbished tennis courts around Wirral. Courts only cost £4 an hour to hire, although you’ll need to take your own racket and balls. Find a court near you using this link.

2. Go on an art trail in New Brighton. From giant dogs and giraffes, to Stormtroopers and Jedi Masters, see how many of the murals you can find. Don’t forget to stop at one of the many independent bars, cafés or restaurants and end the perfect day with a show at the Floral Pavilion

3. Try your hand at watersports. Whether you’re a thrill-seeker or a family looking for oar-some fun on the lake, Wirral Watersports Centre has got something for you. Children aged 8-16 will love the Children’s Holiday Clubs filled with sailing, raft building and paddleboarding, while there are also courses for to learn windsurfing, sailing and powerboating. 4. Take a ride on the Subterranean Elevator. Running all Summer at Williamson Art Gallery, the immersive Subterranean Elevator exhibition invites intrepid visitors to explore the inner worlds of soil and the subconscious mind. Also be sure to check out kid-friendly workshops running all summer.

5. Catch a gig at the oldest standing building in Merseyside. Birkenhead Priory hosts regular Sunday music performances from musicians across the region. They start at 2pm every Sunday throughout the Summer and are totally free to attend. Visit Birkenhead Priory's website for a full list of performers.

6. Play Footgolf or Pitch & Putt. Did you know a family of four can play Footgolf or Pitch & Putt at Arrowe Park Golf Course for just £10 this Summer? Hole-y moley! There is no need to book, just turn up, pay and play. All equipment is provided.

7. Enjoy the views at Wirral Country Park. Britain’s first designated country park boasts breathtaking views over Thurstaston beach and the Dee Estuary. Visitors can also hire a bike at Thurstaston Visitor Centre and cycle along the picturesque Wirral Way. Wirral is blessed with many other beautiful parks too, including Arrowe Park, Royden Park and North Wirral Coastal Park.

8. Celebrate nature with ‘Stories of Nature’. Wirral Libraries are hosting a programme of activities and workshops aimed at young people and their families, celebrating Wirral’s diverse natural environment. There will be more than 40 events between 21 July and 29 Aug, taking place at libraries, parks, nature reserves and the Floral Pavilion theatre. All events are free but need to be booked in advance. 9. Get active at Bidston Sports & Activity Centre. As well as a  three storey Soft Play adventure area to explore, kids will love Tag Active, an exciting game involving climbing and running and collecting points. Tag Active costs £10 for three games but Teen Invigor8 members can play for free, as well as well as accessing gyms, pools and golf at leisure centres across Wirral, for just £17.50 a month. Soft Play is £8 per child (under 1 free). 

10. Take your kids to a Family Fun Day! Family Hubs are hosting three fabulous, fun-filled events this Summer, with loads of activities aimed at children aged 5 and under. Get yourself along to The Walled Garden in Liscard’s Central Park on Wed 30 July (10.30am - 12pm), Birkenhead Park Visitors Centre on Wed 6 Aug (10.30am - 12pm) and New Ferry Community Centre on Wed 13 Aug (10am - 11.30am).
