Wirral Local Plan moves to next stage

The draft Local Plan has been given the green light to move ahead at a meeting of Wirral Council.

The Local Plan is focused on delivering Wirral’s housing and employment needs through major regeneration primarily across the Left Bank area.  At the heart of the Plan is the comprehensive regeneration of Birkenhead to address several decades of decline.

The aim is to use this once in a lifetime opportunity currently available through significant funding opportunities to regenerate brownfield locations mainly on the eastern side of the borough to meet these housing and employment requirements. 

The Local Plan also sets out a range of policies which will help the Borough respond to climate change, protection of our natural and built heritage assets and provide the affordable homes that the borough needs.

The Plan reflects the feedback we have received from our local communities and will help shape the Borough over the coming 15 years.

Following the agreement of the full council to move ahead, the next step will be the Regulation 19 consultation which will give any interested parties the opportunity to make representations relating to the ‘soundness’ or legal compliance of Wirral’s proposed Local Plan. This is expected to take place starting in May - full details of this will be made available in due course.

Following this consultation the Plan  will be submitted to the Secretary of State for Independent Examination.
