“I see trees of green, red roses too…”

What a wonderful world Wirral can be, with its record-breaking number of Green Flag awards for the management of parks and open spaces.

No fewer than 37 Green Flag awards were awarded to Wirral parks this year – more than any other authority in the North West. The achievement is testament to the hard work of council parks and countryside staff and local people who volunteer their time to support, either as individuals or as part of Friends groups.

Many of those places have been receiving their flags and flying them high and proud over the last couple of weeks, as you can see in our photos taken with the Mayor of Wirral, Cllr Brian Kenny.

The Green Flag, awarded by the environmental charity Keep Britain Today, is the quality mark for parks and green spaces and is awarded in recognition of the hard work and dedication of the people that care for the green space so that visitors and residents alike can enjoy it.

Wirral’s 37 Green Flag awards in 2025 increases the number of awards achieved by two from last year’s 35, with all those accredited last year maintaining their status this year. The two ‘new’ awards are for Hilbre Islands Nature Reserve and Landican Cemetery who were both named as Green Heritage Sites for the first time in 2025.
