Results from a survey will help the council understand the views and experiences of local people in relation to pharmacy services.

Opening times, locations and the services offered at local pharmacies are the key topics Wirral people are being asked to comment on as the council does a three-yearly review of pharmacy services.

Every three years, Wirral Council has to produce a Pharmaceutical Needs Assessment (PNA) which is a detailed review of the existing pharmacy provision in the borough. The review is used by NHS commissioning managers when applications for new pharmacies are being assessed.

Wirral’s most recent PNA was produced in 2022 and concluded that the borough is well served in terms of the spread of community pharmacies. At that point, there was one pharmacy for every 3,402 residents, which compared favourably to the national average of one pharmacy for every 5,000 residents.

As part of the work underway to update the 2022 review, residents are being asked, through a questionnaire, about the services and location of pharmacies, how often they use them, how they travel to their chosen pharmacy and what’s the most important thing when deciding which pharmacy to go to.

Cllr Julie McManus, Chair of Wirral’s Adult Social Care and Public Health committee, said:

Local pharmacies are one of the first places we turn to when we need support or advice around our health and wellbeing. Ensuring that pharmacies can meet the needs of Wirral’s population is really important.

If you use a pharmacy, sharing your thoughts and experiences in this survey will help us shape the future of pharmacy services in the borough.

The questionnaire is anonymous and should take around 10-15 minutes to complete. It will be open for comments until 5 December 2024 for all Wirral residents.

Results from the survey will help the council understand the views and experiences of local people in relation to pharmacy services, and will form an important part of the overall Pharmacy Needs Assessment. The full PNA will be shared for comments from the public before the final version is published by October 2025.

The survey is being hosted by Liverpool City Council. Wirral residents will need to select Wirral from the list in question one. The survey is available at Pharmacy Services - Have your say.

Paper copies of the survey and alternate formats can be requested by emailing pnawirral@wirral.gov.uk or by phoning 0151 606 2005.
