“The best decision we made”: Leader shares extra care experience
Extra care housing schemes allow residents, who meet the eligibility criteria, to remain independent for as long as possible with individually assessed care and support on-site.
When Council leader Paul Stuart’s father’s care needs changed, moving him into a local extra care facility allowed him to retain his independence.
Speaking at the official opening of Spinnaker House in November 2024, the borough's largest extra care facility to date, you can hear more about his family’s experience here:
With care staff available 24 hours a day 365 days a year should residents need, Spinnaker House is the latest development in the council’s plans to help Wirral residents stay in their own homes for longer.
There are 19 extra care schemes currently operating across specialist (for people with additional needs ages 18-54) and general (over 55s) extra care, responding to the changing needs of Wirral communities.
The Office for National Statistics (ONS) projections for Wirral show that the population for age group 65+ in 2023 sat at 72,839 and by 2040 it is predicted to be 93,252.
Cllr Stuart said:
These demographic changes will impact on housing, support and health demands. So we’re future-proofing, by aligning our commissioning intentions to meet the needs of our growing and changing communities now.
