More than £7 million could be invested on improving Wirral’s roads, footways and bridges in 2025-26 under plans which will be discussed at the next meeting of the Environment, Climate Emergency and Transport Committee next week.

A report to be presented at the meeting on Tuesday 11th March will highlight details of the indicative allocations of funding Wirral could receive under the Liverpool City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement Authority in the coming financial year to be spent on improvements to Wirral’s highways infrastructure.

The anticipated grant funding for Highway Maintenance in 2025-26 is £3.9m, which would be supplemented by a further £160,000 for bridge maintenance works.

A further £1.25m is expected to be allocated, ringfenced for investment in the Key Route Network, while the area will also benefit this year from an allocation of more than £1.75m from the Department of Transport to fix potholes. This takes the total amount of investment potentially to £7,084,835.

The list of proposed roads to be repaired in 2025-2026 will be discussed by the committee.

If approved, the roads included within the proposed list will go through an additional process, including reviewing the treatment proposed and making sure that the works are co-ordinated with any planned works from other departments or with utility companies.

Following this, some roads on this list may need to be removed from the programme and will not be repaired this year. If any roads are removed, they will be looked at again and considered for a future maintenance programme.

Wirral Council has a statutory duty to maintain the public highway in Wirral, as set out in the Highways Act 1980, the Road Traffic Regulations Act 1984, the Road Traffic Act 1988, the Local Government Act 2000 and the Traffic Management Act 2004.
