New wheelchair accessible swings unveiled at two Wirral parks
Wheelchair users can now benefit from state-of-the-art accessible swings at two Wirral parks.
The swings - one in Birkenhead Park, the other in Central Park, Liscard - were officially opened on 29 May by the Mayor of Wirral, Cllr Brian Kenny.
The swings can accommodate up to 250kg and fit most large wheelchairs.
I’m so pleased to be opening these swings and broadening the accessibility of our parks.
A lot of care has been taken during the installation of these swings to make them a key part of the play area, putting them in a prominent place so they can be used alongside other equipment.
It’s fantastic that many Wirral families will be able to enjoy these new features with summer just around the corner.
The total cost for both swings, including the larger double bay at Central Park, was £45K. Further funding has also been set aside to provide additional swings at Central Park.
The swings were funded by the council’s capital programme. Funding from the council’s capital programme cannot be used for day-to-day items like running council services. Capital funding can only be used for assets and infrastructure.
People who wish to use the swings can access them with the use of a radar key.* The swings will be available for use during daylight hours.

*- Residents who don’t have their own radar key or have forgotten to bring one, can borrow one from (opening hours apply):

- Birkenhead Park Visitor’s Centre.
The swing dimensions are 1237mm long from ramp to steel wheel bar and 691mm wide, the height from the swing floor to the underside of the handle bar is 722mm.
