Shaping Wirral's Housing Future Together

Earlier this week partners from across the housing, regeneration and community sectors came together for the launch of our new Strategic Housing Partnership (SHP) in what was an important milestone for Wirral. I want to use this edition of my monthly blog to reflect on that event and share why it represents such a significant moment for our borough.

The inaugural meeting brought into one room our Registered Providers, Homes England, the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority, Wirral Met College and senior council leaders. It was the first time we had convened this group in this way, united by a shared commitment to strengthening housing provision and improving outcomes for residents across Wirral.

The discussions were honest and constructive. We talked openly about the pressures we face, such as increasing demand for social housing, rising homelessness, and the need for more genuinely affordable homes in every part of the borough. But the real strength of the meeting came from the shared recognition that, alongside these challenges, there is huge opportunity.

By working in a more coordinated and strategic way, we can accelerate development across a range of sites, strengthen our approach to homelessness prevention, and secure greater investment from regional and national partners.

Following the morning session, we expanded the conversation further at the afternoon Housing Partnership Event. This brought in a wider group of developers, local businesses, skills providers, community organisations and partners from health and regeneration. It was an inspiring room to be in, full of people who care deeply about the future of Wirral and who each play a different role in shaping the places we call home.

Across both sessions, a clear message emerged: housing is not simply a building issue - it is a community issue. Good-quality, affordable homes influence everything from health and wellbeing to employment, education and the strength of our neighbourhoods. When housing works well, it unlocks opportunity.

Looking forward, the Strategic Housing Partnership will begin developing a shared programme of work. This will include identifying opportunities to bring forward new sites for development, strengthening our collective approach to supported and temporary accommodation, and ensuring we are ready to take advantage of funding streams that can help us deliver more homes at pace and scale.

What I took from the event was a real sense of optimism. Yes, our challenges are significant, but so too is the commitment of the partners working with us. The energy, the ideas and the willingness to work differently give me confidence that we are turning an important corner.

For residents, this work will translate into more safe, affordable and sustainable homes - homes that meet local needs and support stronger, healthier neighbourhoods. For our partners, it will mean deeper collaboration across services and a clearer shared direction for how we deliver our housing ambitions.

I will continue to use this blog to update you as we make progress. The launch of the Strategic Housing Partnership is just the beginning, but it marks a decisive step forward. Together, we can build a Wirral where everyone has access to a good home, in a community they are proud to be part of.
