Hatch a plan for half term with the Easter HAF Programme
With Easter break just a few weeks away, parents and carers are being urged to book their child’s space at one of dozens of Easter Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) clubs across Wirral.
Local holiday clubs will be opening their doors over the school break to provide a range of interesting activities to keep the young people active, engaged and learning new things - ranging from yoga and wellbeing sessions to bushcraft skills, music lessons and sports camps.
HAF clubs will run throughout the Easter break and places are available for young people aged between 5-16 who are in receipt of benefits-related free school meals.
The programme is coordinated for Wirral Council by the Community Interest Company, Edsential. Funding for the scheme has been provided by the Department for Education.
Cllr Stephen Bennett, Chair of Wirral Council’s Children, Families and Education Committee, said:
With even more clubs joining the programme, this year’s HAF offers children and young people an exciting selection of Easter-themed activities. Youngsters can enjoy outdoor adventures and multi-sports sessions to arts and crafts, while older children can take advantage of wellness workshops, creative projects, and team challenges.
As well as a wide range of daily activities, all the clubs will be providing delicious, nutritious meals and snacks to keep children and young people fuelled throughout the day.
Heather Lewis, HAF Manager at Edsential said:
We are delighted to bring another fantastic lineup of activities for children and young people across Wirral this Easter. Our goal is to create a welcoming and inclusive environment where they can develop new skills, build confidence, and form lasting friendships. It’s a privilege to be part of a programme that makes such a positive impact on families in our community.
The Christmas 2024 HAF programme was a huge success, with 1469 attendees, including 659 SEND children. More than 50 clubs across the borough provided 1,700 free meals, offering children and young people the chance to participate in fun-filled activities while staying nourished. Feedback from parents was overwhelmingly positive, with many praising the friendly and supportive staff, as well as the engaging activities that kept children entertained during the holidays.
Cllr Bennett said: “Thousands of young people enjoy the holiday schemes so much that they return year on year. So, if you know a young person who might be eligible, but hasn’t tried one of the clubs yet, please show them what’s available and encourage them to give it a go.”
Parents and carers are encouraged to check if their child is eligible for free school meals as it could enable them to take part in future holiday programmes and unlock a range of other support. More information about free school meals is posted on the Wirral Council website.
