The awards acknowledge the challenges overcome and the successes of young people in Wirral.

Children Looked After and Care Leavers have been celebrated at an awards evening.

The annual Children Looked After and Care Leaver, Success and Achievement Awards acknowledge the challenges overcome and the successes of Wirral’s care-experienced young people.

Each year, young people are nominated by foster carers, social workers, personal advisors, teachers and other professionals. This year, more than 170 children and young people were put forward for their individual achievements.

Cllr Stephen Bennett, Chair of the Children, Families and Education Committee for Wirral Council, said:

This award ceremony gave nominees the chance to celebrate how far they have come.

Being a care-experienced young person can be difficult. I would like to congratulate the winners on their fantastic achievements but I’d also like to extend that to every care leaver or child looked after here, as they all deserve that recognition.

All nominees received a certificate giving the reason for their nomination as well as a selection box and a voucher, the latter gifted from authority’s Virtual School for Children Looked After, a service which supports children looked after with their educational needs.

Alongside the acknowledgement of all nominees, this year’s event saw awards sponsored and presented by some key partners.

The categories were:

Compassion Award sponsored by Catch 22: Winner - Teddy Johnson.

Aspiration Award sponsored by Liverpool John Moore’s University: Winner - Maggie Van Veen

Inspiration Award sponsored by Wirral Chamber of Commerce: Winner - Callum Jones

Friendship and Achievement Awards sponsored by Wirral Councillors*: Winners -

  • Alexandra Maddocks
  • Karlie Jackson
  • Adam Roache
  • Micha Jo Wilson
  • Angel Mckeown

Along with being recognised for their achievements, nominees enjoyed entertainment from a local singer and a performance by the SmartArt group from Pilgrim Street. The young people could also enjoy candy floss, a photo booth and face painting.
