Wirral Council is to take decisive steps to deliver a refreshed approach to regeneration.

The move is in response to the Regeneration Review undertaken by Aughton Lane which was presented to the Council's Policy and Resources Committee in November.

A Regeneration Action Plan will now go before the Policy and Resources Committee on 17 December and if approved by councillors the proposed changes will be implemented swiftly.

This sets out a clear path to reset the council's regeneration programme and will see governance strengthened, and ambitions more aligned with financial realities.

A vital part of this will be a refresh of the Birkenhead 2040 Vision to reflect current challenges and opportunities while maintaining its long-term ambition for the Left Bank [are we still using this?] of Wirral, stretching from New Brighton through Liscard and Seacombe, Wirral Waters and Birkenhead to New Ferry and Bromborough.

Work with partners will be strengthened through the creation of a Strategic Partnership Group, bringing together key leaders and industry experts to shape governance and delivery for the future.

Recruitment is already underway for senior roles, including an Interim Executive Director – Place and a new Assistant Director for Capital Programmes, to provide leadership and drive delivery.

The Council is prioritising projects to ensure resources are focused where they will have the greatest impact and financial sustainability will be embedded into the heart of every decision, with revised governance and project management arrangements to be implemented by March.

Leader of Wirral Council, Cllr Paula Basnett, said:

The review has concluded, and the focus now is firmly on action.

This is a positive reset for regeneration in Wirral. We’ve listened, we’ve learned, and now we’re acting. The refreshed approach will provide clarity, stability, and confidence for our communities and partners. Our focus is on delivering real benefits for residents and ensuring regeneration plays its part in a sustainable future for the borough.
