A planning application to create a new health, fitness and wellness club at one of the country’s largest regeneration projects has been submitted, Wirral Council can confirm.

David Lloyd Leisure, a leading health, fitness and wellness group, has submitted plans for a brand-new club at Wirral Waters.

The proposed club, which the company says would create up to 100 new jobs upon completion, marks a potentially significant step in the development of the area as well as being part of David Lloyd’s ongoing expansion strategy.

Wirral Council leader, Cllr Paul Stuart, said:

While this application is in the early stages and is subject to planning permission, its submission is in itself an important statement of belief not just in Wirral Waters but in the wider regeneration across Wirral which this authority is pushing ahead with.

And being on the border of two of this borough’s least affluent wards, Bidston and Seacombe, I have no doubt the investment and jobs this could bring if it meets with planning approval will be very welcome, and another boost for the area along with the continued expansion of Wirral Waters which has this year already seen the completion of the landmark Millers Quay.

The planning application has been officially submitted to Wirral Council, with the proposed site located in Peel Waters’ Bidston Dock site off Wallasey Bridge Road, in the heart of the Wirral Waters regeneration area.

Under the proposals the new club would cover six acres and offer a wide range of state-of-the-art facilities, including:

  • Three weather-protected tennis courts
  • Six canopy-covered padel courts - making it the biggest padel facility on the Wirral
  • Heated indoor and outdoor swimming pools
  • An indoor Spa and an outdoor Spa Garden
  • A sports hall with two indoor courts
  • A new state of the art gym
  • A children’s play area
  • A vibrant cafe lounge

David Lloyd Leisure has made a commitment to become carbon neutral by 2030 and says if approved the new Club will incorporate the latest in sustainability technology to ensure it operates as efficiently as possible.

The location for the club is close to major transport links, including the M53, the Mersey Tunnel, and Birkenhead North train station, making it easily accessible.

Richard Mawdsley, Director of Development at Wirral Waters, welcomed the “market leading operator like David Lloyd Leisure” planning to bring world-class facilities to Wirral Waters saying it “is hugely exciting and a real game-changer for the area” and adding:

We have long term plans to create a leisure-led, mixed-use destination in the Bidston area, and this is just the start.

Stuart Caswell, New Clubs Acquisition Director at David Lloyd Leisure added:

We are delighted to be part of the future for Wirral Waters. Our plan is to construct a state-of-the-art health and wellness Club that not only enhances the area and creates a range of new jobs and opportunities for the local community, but also reflects the needs of people living in the area.
