Progress on bringing Birkenhead Market to its modern new home has taken major step forward.

The “soft strip” demolition of the site at Princes Pavement - which started mid-September - has now been completed, opening the way for the fit-out work starting on the location for the new market.

This follows the recent engagement with community and traders on proposals for the market which will be conveniently based next to town centre’s bus station.

Detailed design images were presented to the public showing how the new revitalised Birkenhead Market could look, including potential layout for traders’ stalls.

Leader of Wirral Council, Cllr Paul Stuart, said:

It’s great to see the behind-the-scenes efforts coming to fruition, showcasing the significant progress on the new Birkenhead Market. This development demonstrates our unwavering commitment to delivering an outstanding market for Birkenhead.

The new market represents a multimillion-pound investment and a substantial pledge by the council towards the future of Birkenhead town centre. It will be a central element in the town’s regeneration, stretching from the waterfront to the town centre.

Our goal is to make Birkenhead an attractive destination and a wonderful place to visit, as well as to attract inward investment that will bring high-quality jobs to residents. This project is not just about creating a market; it’s about stimulating the local economy, boosting business opportunities, and fostering economic growth. Above all, we are committed to creating a fantastic environment where people want to live and raise their families, a future we are excited to build together.

Following on from the engagement and in light of the comments and ideas from the public and market traders, the next stage for the development of new Birkenhead Market will be to finalise the design and to go out to tender for a partner to start the main works at the Prince Pavement site in 2025.

In the meantime, engagement with Birkenhead Market traders on the proposals will be continuing with an upcoming trader workshop, details of which will be communicated directly to those in the Market.
