Wirral Youth Justice Service scoops industry award

27 October 2026
IMPACT Award

A service which has helped reduce youth reoffending by almost 17% has been recognised for its commitment to improving the lives of children.

Wirral Youth Justice Service (YJS) was recognised at the North West IMPACT Awards.

The service received the accolade for its Child First approach, viewing individuals who offend as children rather than offenders, as well as innovative practice and contribution to wider system reform.

The award recognised several significant achievements, including receiving a Good rating from HM Inspectorate of Probation following an inspection in 2025 and achieving national Youth Justice SEND Quality Lead Status.

Meanwhile, the Youth Justice Service annual report that was recently published showed that youth reoffending in Wirral has decreased by almost 17% over the past two years, while the number of first-time offenders entering the youth justice system remains lower than the regional and national average.

The service's impact is demonstrated through a range of successful programmes and initiatives, including:

Peer Mentoring  - Volunteers from the community who work with young people and build trusted, child-led relationship.

No Comment Pathway  - An alternative route into Merseyside’s Out of Court Disposal Framework, specifically designed to support children who may otherwise face prosecution.

Operation Inclusion - Works with children already known to the Wirral YJS and supports them and their families to make positive and lasting changes.

In the Zone - An interactive programme in partnership with Merseyside Police, delivered to pupils on themes that may affect them in the community, More than 4,000 children have taken part.

Turnaround Programme - A Government scheme that has helped more than 300 young people in Wirral who were considered at risk of becoming involved in anti-social behaviour.

We are incredibly proud to receive this recognition. It reflects the dedication, passion and professionalism of our staff, volunteers and partners, who work tirelessly every day to support children, young people and families across Wirral.

Most importantly, however, it reflects the voices of the children and families we work alongside, and our shared commitment to improving outcomes through a Child First approach that focuses on strengths, potential and future opportunities.
