Special events and workshops to celebrate artist's largest exhibition
The largest ever exhibition of work by one of the most important British artists of the 20th century is at The Williamson Art Gallery & Museum.
The works of Leonard McComb RA (1930-2018) are on display at the Birkenhead venue. The exhibition Nature and Humanity will be at the Williamson until Saturday 31st October. It is free to the public.
During his career, McComb was an elected full member of the prestigious Royal Academy of Arts in London. He was also Keeper of the Royal Academy, placing him in charge of the Royal Academy Schools between 1995-1998.
In total, more than 60 paintings, watercolour and sculptures are on display, along with a 10-metre drawing - the largest on paper held by any UK public collection which took several days to install.
The exhibition features several pieces of work from McComb’s estate, as well as a choice loans from major public and private collections, including the Manchester Art Gallery and the Royal Academy. It has been supported by the Weston Loan Programme with Art Fund.
This is another example of the magnificent programme that is hosted by the Williamson all year round.
To attract the work of McComb is a credit to all those involved. The exhibition will appeal to a wide range of audiences and I am sure it will be a great success.
During the exhibition, there are tours scheduled with the Williamson’s curator Josh Mackarell on Wednesday 2nd September at 12pm and Friday 2nd October at 6pm.

Landlines Studios, based in Hamilton Square, will also host workshops on Saturday 19th September at 10.30am-12.30pm, Saturday 3rd October and Saturday 17th October (both 10.30am-12.30pm). Participants can use naturally foraged materials and inks to create their own works inspired by McComb’s practice. Click here to reserve a space.
