A free swimming initiative launched to help Wirral families over the holidays has seen an increase in the numbers using leisure pools of more than 30% since it was introduced at the beginning of the month.

Leader of Wirral Council, Cllr Paula Basnett, had announced the free swimming as the long summer holidays began.

The aim is to help families find affordable ways to keep children active and occupied during the school break.

The free sessions are available for any timetabled public or family swim sessionswhich take placefrom Monday to Friday between 10am and 4pm throughout August.

Cllr Basnett said:

The significant increase in pool use since the launch of this  free swimming initiative shows just how valuable it has already been for local families at a time when many are feeling the pressure of the cost of living.

The summer holidays can be an expensive time for parents and carers trying to keep children active and entertained. With the recent hot weather, having free access to our pools has also provided a welcome way for people to stay cool and enjoy themselves.

I would also like to thank the staff at our leisure centres, who have worked incredibly hard to make this initiative a success. From providing additional lifeguards and carrying out extra pool cleaning to supporting the scheme behind the scenes, their efforts have enabled us to introduce free swimming at pace and ensure residents can benefit from it safely and efficiently.
