War Memorial undergoes significant clean-up
The South African War Memorial in Wallasey's Central Park has undergone a significant clean-up by Wirral Council’s Parks and Countryside Service to help preserve an important piece of the borough's heritage.
The Grade II-listed memorial, which is more than 120 years old, was carefully treated to protect the historic structure.
The memorial commemorates the men of Wallasey who lost their lives in the South African War between 1899 and 1902, while also recognising local residents who served during the conflict.
It was steam cleaned before being treated with an algicide to help protect it from future biological growth and weathering.
The Parks and Countryside Service is now developing a maintenance plan to help ensure the memorial, which features the figure of Britannia, remains in good condition throughout the year.
Further improvements are also planned, including the installation of a new brass plaque displaying the names of those who lost their lives in the South African War.
The memorial's railings are set to be repainted by volunteers from the Central Park community group, with all works expected to be completed ahead of Remembrance Day in November.
The South African (Boer) War Memorial in Central Park, Liscard, Wallasey, is a Grade II listed monument, erected in 1902–1903 to commemorate local men who served in the conflict, including those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
As an important part of Central Park’s heritage and the borough’s wider history, the memorial remains a significant reminder of the service and sacrifice of local people. Wirral Council is committed to ensuring the monument is treated with the dignity and respect it deserves, while preserving it for future generations.
The Council will continue to carry out regular inspection, maintenance and conservation work throughout the year to keep the memorial in the best possible condition. This proactive approach will help protect its historic significance, extend its lifespan and reduce the need for more extensive and costly restoration work in the future.
