It is nearly here – the first phase of the biggest change to domestic waste collections in Wirral for 20 years begins on Monday July 6.

Starting next week, the first Wirral residents will have their food waste collected every week using their new food waste caddy.

The collections of their food waste will take place weekly from then on –on the same day that people’s grey and green bins are currently emptied, making it easier to remember. If your bin is emptied on Wednesday, for example, so too will your food waste caddy.

Around a third of all Wirral households in the first phase that begins next week, with further phases for the remaining groups of residents scheduled for week beginning 27 July and 17 August respectively.

The aim behind the introduction of the separate collections is to stop heavy, moisture-rich food waste going either for incineration or to landfill, which in turn will lower harmful greenhouse gas emissions. The food waste itself will instead be transformed into renewable forms such as biogas fuel or bio-fertiliser for use in farming.

Ahead of the collections starting, Wirral Council and its waste management partner, Biffa, continue to deliver all the equipment needed for households to get them ready for their start date, which includes their outside caddy, a smaller caddy for the kitchen, a supply of bags and all the information people need to use the service effectively.

The last time bin collections changed so significantly across the whole of Wirral was in 2005 when the grey bin for recyclable items was introduced and alternate weekly collections of recyclable and non-recyclable items began.

Households that haven’t yet received their food waste caddy can check the collection calendar online to find out when their delivery is due and when their food waste collection will begin.
