Details have been confirmed about how food waste collections will be introduced in Wirral this summer.

The weekly collections will be rolled out to residents in three phases beginning on Monday 6 July 2026 for around a third of households in the borough.

Further phases for the remaining groups of residents are scheduled for the weeks beginning 27 July and 17 August.

The changes are part of the Government’s ‘Simpler Recycling’ programme for household waste in England and Wales, which was introduced under the Environment Act 2021 and aims to ensure that all local authorities are collecting and recycling waste in the same way.

The programme includes the requirement for all councils to introduce weekly separate food waste collections. Food waste can be recycled into renewable energy and fertiliser and reduces the impact on the environment.

Food waste will be collected on the same day as people’s current grey and green bin collections, so it will be easy to remember. If your bin is currently collected on a Monday and your street is in phase one, you will get your first food waste collection on Monday 6 July.

From June, residents will receive two grey food waste recycling caddies – an outdoor caddy with a secure lid and a smaller kitchen food waste caddy for daily use – as well as a roll of caddy liners and detailed information about collections and how to use the service. Each outdoor caddy will be delivered with a sticker showing the exact date that householder’s collections will start.

Cllr Max Booth, Chair of the Environment, Climate Emergency and Transport Committee for Wirral Council, said:

Being able to separate food waste from general waste is something we know many residents have wanted to be able to do for some time and it is to be welcomed that all local authorities are now doing it.

However, we do not underestimate the significance of the change for residents and we are determined to provide them with as much information, guidance and support they might need to make the transition.

The Simpler Recycling programme has already seen a significant change to bin collections in Wirral this year, with residents now able to recycle foil, aerosol sprays, plastic tubs and trays and drinks cartons in their grey bins.

Information about the new collections will be updated at wirral.gov.uk/foodwaste or follow Wirral Council on social media for updates and reminders.
