Birkenhead’s role in the formation and development of the international Scouting Movement, as well as several of the town’s significant landmarks, are being celebrated in the new street furniture that has been installed as part of the town centre improvement scheme.

The new timber and stone benches feature engraved motifs and information plaques about landmarks including Birkenhead Park, Birkenhead Priory and Ferry, Cammell Laird Shipyard, Birkenhead’s Street Tramway, and The Queensway Tunnel, as well as the Scout Movement.

The installation of these benches follows the removal of the fencing and the reopening of the central walkway within the town ahead of Christmas last year (2025).

The area is now referred to as ‘Scouting Square’ and, in addition to the benches, features a variety of scouting badge emblems etched onto the paving stones.

It’s great to see Scouting’s historical link to Birkenhead recognised in the town centre redevelopment.

Scouting Square is outside Primark, a former YMCA building where founder of the Scouts, Robert Baden-Powell, visited to officially inaugurate the movement.

The Birkenhead Town Centre project was funded from a combination of sources, including the UK government’s Future High Street Fund (FHSF) and Liverpool City Region Combined Authority’s Active Travel fund.
