Wirral Cemeteries and Crematorium Service has been recognised for its excellent services in bereavement.

The eight sites operated by Wirral Council received the Gold Standard under the Institute of Cemetery and Crematorium Management’s (ICCM) Charter for the Bereaved.

The assessment considers a range of areas including customer care, operational standards, environmental responsibility and the provision of clear, accessible information for families.

Wirral received scores of more than 90% for the Cemetery and Crematorium Service it provides to residents. The Gold Standard accreditation reflects the high quality of work delivered by staff members.

This recognition is testament to the compassionate, caring and professional bereavement service that each member of staff at offer all year round.

We want to assure residents that they will be given the highest quality and most dignified support during such a difficult period of their lives.

Our staff are highly trained to deliver this service, all the while maintaining grounds and protecting the wide range of wildlife that live on the sites.

Cllr Max Booth, Chair of the Environment, Climate Emergency and Transport Committee

Landican Cemetery and Crematorium was recently awarded Green Flag Heritage Site Accreditation in recognition of the way its historic features are cared for and promoted.

Wirral Cemeteries and Crematorium Service is also a finalist for Best Cemetery and Crematorium Service at the Association for Public Service Excellence (APSE) Awards 2026. The ceremony takes place at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Liverpool in September.

Achieving Gold Standard status, alongside our Green Flag accreditation and nomination for an APSE Award, demonstrates the dedication and commitment of our staff members.

We want to provide the best service possible for Wirral residents and the ICCM Charter for the Bereaved assessment helps us achieve that.

We are constantly looking at what we can do to improve our services within the relevant rules and regulations, and are always learning ways to enhance what we offer.
