Next steps for Birkenhead town centre and waterfront
A key milestone is about to be achieved as Wirral Council moves towards selecting contractors to deliver major works at Woodside waterfront and Birkenhead town centre.
The coming year is set to see tens of millions of pounds invested in the redevelopment of Birkenhead Waterfront and Birkenhead town centre areas. These works are a key element of the plans for the town and also fit in with the wider ambitious regeneration programme for Wirral’s whole Left Bank from Bromborough through Birkenhead, Wirral Waters, Seacombe and Liscard to New Brighton.
The local authority has secured grants from a number of separate Government sources and is now pressing ahead at pace to deliver on the council’s regeneration programme.
A report to the meeting of the council’s Economy, Regeneration and Housing Committee, will now seek agreement from councillors for officers to move forward with identifying the right partners to take the work to the next stage.
The regeneration work will be using the responses to extensive consultations over the future of the town centre, including the ongoing Woodside waterfront consultation which you can still take part in, to forge ahead in making Birkenhead fit for the future.
This will see key areas upgraded, with construction of the Conway Street/Europa Boulevard project and the Grange Road/Charing Cross/Grange Road West scheme both due to start shortly. There will also be further development of the design for the Waterfront area taking into account the ongoing public consultation.
The total cost of the works comes from a combination of grants from Government sources, including Levelling-Up Funding, Future High Streets, Active Travel and Town Deal, and will see close to £34.5m invested in upgrading the area in the next couple of years.
