Wirral Council is running a consultation on a significant regeneration project aiming to connect Birkenhead and Liscard with better travel facilities.

The scheme is the first part of the Liverpool City Region Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure project (LCWIP) proposed to be delivered in Wirral, and aims to encourage more people to walk, cycle or wheel for short journeys along a redesigned route.

So what are the proposals? Here, we take our second in-depth look at sections of the route.

In focus: Cleveland Street

The road will be narrowed to allow a new two-way cycle track to be provided, separate from the road. Two existing pay and display parking bays will be removed on the north side and one new one will be created on the south side.

The road will remain two-way for motor vehicles and parking bays in front of houses will be unaffected. A small shared surface space will be provided at the junction with Taylor Street and a new signalised pedestrian crossing is proposed next to this junction.

Taylor Street is a relatively quiet street so it is proposed to make it one-way for all vehicles between Canning Street and Cleveland Street. This means cyclists will share the road space with other vehicles in this direction.

In the opposite direction, it is proposed to provide a contraflow cycle lane to allow cycling towards Canning Street from Cleveland Street. Pedestrians will use the existing footways. At the Canning Street end, the road will be narrowed to allow shared pedestrian and cycle space to be provided. This means that vehicles will only be able to turn left into Taylor Street.

Pedestrians and cyclists will share the space that passes the Tram access on Canning Street to a signalised crossing to Egerton Wharf, where the shared space continues towards the Egerton Dock bridge The other sides of the junction will be pedestrian crossings only.

In focus: Egerton and Tower Wharfs

In order to provide safe access for pedestrians and cyclists across Egerton Dock Bridge, it is proposed to make the bridge one-way to all traffic towards Canning Street (this is the existing bus route direction). This means space will be created for a new two-way cycle track across the bridge with pedestrians using the existing footways.

Two-way road access will be retained on both sides of the bridge to allow access to businesses. A new two-way cycle track will be created around Tower Wharf with a pedestrian and cyclist parallel crossing close to the junction with Tower Road.
