Mayor and Chief Executive raise flag in support of LGBTQ+ community

Chief Executive and Mayor of Wirral raise the progress pride flag

The Progress Pride flag has been raised above Wallasey Town Halls to mark International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT).

This annual celebration is an important day for LGBTQ+ people as it commemorates the World Health Organisation removing homosexuality from their International Classification of Diseases on 17 May 1990. It was previously listed as a mental health disorder.

Since then, LGBTQ+ organisations around the world have marked the occasion by celebrating sexual and gender diversities through flag-raisings, events and commemorations on 17 May.

The aim is to help create a global dialogue that raises awareness and promotes the reduction in violence, discrimination, and repression of LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.
