Building works to start at Birkenhead Market St Werburgh entrance

Birkenhead Market remains open to the public while construction work takes place at the St Werburghs entrance.

The project forms part of a wider transformational regeneration programme which includes a focus on Birkenhead town centre and the Market, underpinned by the Birkenhead 2040 Framework.

The construction work taking place will see the substation currently housed in the market, that supplies power to both the market and Princes Pavements, be decommissioned.

As part of the scheme two units, 13-15 St Werburgh’s Square, will be demolished. Once the shop units have been removed a second phase of work will see the construction of a new sub-station on the cleared site that will provide a new power supply to both the current market and the retail units along Princes Pavements. The area will then be paved and a new wall will be constructed to the gable end of 11 St Werburgh’s Square.

Demolition and building works will mean temporary fencing will be placed around the site leading to Birkenhead Market but the passageway from St Werburgh’s Square to the market will remain open to the public during the duration of the works.  

The work, which is in two phases, has commenced with the removal of the glass canopy spanning the passageway to allow for the demolition of 13-15 St Werburgh’s Square. This first phase of the contract is scheduled to run for 6 weeks.

The Market will remain fully open and trading throughout these works.

Once the work is completed the market will have a significantly increased entrance leading to a T-section from St Werburghs Square.

This phased project is scheduled to take three months to complete.

Birkenhead Market offers a huge variety of stalls ranging from butcher, bakery and deli to curtains and blinds, sewing repairs, childrens clothing and toys, to picture framing, antiques and collectables, to a magic shop, to name a few.

New public WiFi is also up-and-running in the market for shoppers.
