A women and girls football weekend has welcomed grassroots teams from across the borough at Bidston Sports and Activity Centre.

Organised by Wirral Council’s Active Wirral leisure service, the tournament saw more than 60 women and 70 under 11s girls playing across two days.

The event, which was held on 19th and 20th October, was the fourth event of its kind.

Cllr Ann Ainsworth, Vice-Chair of Tourism, Communities, Culture and Leisure committee for Wirral Council, said:

Since the first football weekend, which was held October 2023, the events have seen more than 400 women, of all abilities, attend. The girl’s category which includes under 9s to under 14s teams has had more than 1000 youngsters playing.

It’s fantastic to see women and girls’ football flourishing and thriving at a local level – no doubt inspired by the England’s fantastic lionesses.

Jodie Davies, Manager of Wirral Belles football team, said:

We have entered this tournament since it first started last year, we have loved participating and it is great to see so many ladies playing the sport.

Our team Wirral Belles love the atmosphere and it’s such a fantastic day that is well organised.
