The event helped children learn more about keeping their teeth and gums healthy.

Children and families gathered at Brassey Gardens Children’s Centre for an event promoting oral health during National Smile Month.

The Wirral event, part of a programme called the ‘All Together Smiling Roadshow’, encouraged families to ‘feed their smile’ while learning more about keeping their teeth and gums healthy.

The roadshow is part of the All Together Smiling Programme funded by NHS Cheshire and Merseyside and delivered through Beyond – the Cheshire and Merseyside children and young people’s transformation programme in collaboration with council Public Health teams. The programme aims to boost awareness of good dental hygiene and reduce tooth decay in the region’s most vulnerable communities.

Cllr Graeme Cooper, Chair of Wirral Council’s Adult Social Care and Public Health Committee, said:

National Smile Month is the nation's biggest oral health campaign and helps to bring a smile to millions of people.

Tooth decay remains the leading cause of hospital admission for children aged five to nine, with those living in the most deprived communities 3.5 times more likely to have a decaying tooth extracted than children in more affluent areas.

This event brought valuable resources and information to our community in an interactive and accessible way. I’d like to thank everyone who has been involved in organising this fantastic event.

The event welcomed families from across the borough to take part in an interactive workshop to create their own oral health animations as well as receiving resources and support. Using iPad stations, children and families were able to access information about oral health in an engaging and hands-on way.

Attendees were also offered free toothbrush and paste packs and free-flow cups as well as information leaflets and materials.
