Eighty year's ago today Wirral residents joined people around the world to celebrate the end of war in Europe.

Thanksgiving services were held, service men and women paraded, church bells rang out, bonfires were lit, and neighbours joined together to throw hundreds of street parties.

These photographs from Wirral Archives and Birkenhead Reference Library provide a snapshot of some of the momentous celebrations.
