Councillor Brian Kenny takes the chains of office to become Wirral Mayor
Councillor Brian Kenny was elected as Mayor of Wirral for the new civic year at the Council’s Annual General Meeting (Part 1) in Wallasey Town Hall yesterday evening (Wednesday 14 May).
He succeeds Councillor Cherry Povall JP who has served as Mayor since 15 May 2024.
Councillor Kenny represents the Bidston & St. James Ward in Birkenhead and was first elected to Wirral Council in 2006 as a member for the Birkenhead & Tranmere Ward.
He has served on many Council Committees, including a period as Cabinet member for the Environment & Sustainability. He has also represented the Council on the Merseyside Fire and Rescue Authority for the last eight years, including as its Vice Chair for the past six years.
Born in Seacombe, he has lived his whole life in Wirral, apart from a brief period in Ireland as a young child.
After attending St. Joseph’s RC Primary in Seacombe, followed by St. Anselm’s in Birkenhead, he started work with the Post Office in 1970.
He has been a Trade Union Officer since 1970, including as a member of his Union’s National Executive Committee for 37 years, and as a member of its Employment Tribunal Panel, representing members at tribunal cases across the country.
He has two children, Paula and Stephen, and three grandchildren, Finn, Beau and Elias.
Brian has completed four marathons, including New York and Liverpool, which he ran in aid of the Wirral Mayor’s Charity Fund.
A dedicated football and music fan, he has been an Everton season-ticket since 1963 and has seen Bruce Springsteen and the E Street band a remarkable 118 times.
Brian’s wife Helen will be Mayoress for the municipal year ahead.
Councillor Kenny announced that the Mayor’s Special Charity Fund will support and raise funds for Wirral’s Wise Guys and The Holistic Cancer Centre. The Mayors Charity will also make contributions to other charities and voluntary groups at the end of the Mayoral year.
Clatterbridge Councillor, Mary Jordan, was also elected as Wirral’s new Deputy Mayor at the meeting held in the Civic Hall at Wallasey Town Hall.
