Four days of free family events have kick-started the festive season in Liscard, as the Christmas Magic festival – which runs until to Sunday 1st December – came to town.

Great British Bake Off star Lizzy Acker hosted the Christmas light projection switch on Thursday evening at 5pm, which marked the opening of the event. This took place alongside the reveal of the Liscard Sound and Vision Project, a special collaboration between Liscard Community Links CIC and local arts and cultural organisations including Convenience Gallery, Focal Studios, Resilient NW and Break the Mould, working in collaboration with Merseyside Police, Wirral Council and McDonald’s.

The project works with young people from the Liscard area to encourage engagement and community connections through participation in creative diversionary activities, partnering with the Wallasey Detached Youth Team and the Liscard Youth Space. Thursday night saw them produce music, visual arts, murals and graffiti art sessions, before the project’s fantastic light projections and visual displays were switched on at 6pm.

The Christmas Magic festival will continue into the weekend, with a wide programme of entertainment to bring the festive spirit to the town centre. Activities will include live music, dance performances, spectacular light and art displays, food, market stalls and Christmas workshops, as well as children’s fairground rides on Liscard Way.

What’s more, Swifties will want to bookmark the opportunity to come down and see installations from Liverpool’s ‘Taylor Town’ exhibition that have been rebranded especially for the event. The Taylor-themed displays including the giant lips, sofa and piano set ups, which have made their way across the Mersey and will offer plenty of selfie opportunities for fans.

Here’s an overview of what to expect over the next three days of Christmas Magic:

Friday 29th November: 11am – 6pm

Live music will take centre stage on Liscard Way in the festive marquee throughout Friday, with a wide range of performers scheduled to entertain shoppers as they head into the weekend. Character meet and greets will entertain the little ones, with indoor and outdoor stalls also available to browse.

Saturday 30th November: 11am – 4pm

Family fun is the order of the day on Saturday, with appearances from Bluey-themed entertainers, as well as Christmas elf workshops and Storytime with Mrs Claus taking place inside the Cherry Tree Market spaces – with a special quieter session planned between 11am – 12noon for SEND families. Visitors might even spot some baby dinosaurs mingling with the crowds outside McDonald’s on Liscard Way. Taylor Swift fans can join in with a sing-along at 11am inside the Cherry Tree Centre, and this will be followed by a performance from the Liscard Community Choir at 12 noon, with further entertainment taking place on Liscard Way.

For those looking to do some Christmas shopping, there will be plenty of choice with a pop-up indoor market within the Cherry Tree Centre, alongside outdoor market stalls and fairground rides situated on Liscard Way.

Sunday 1st December: 11am – 4pm

The Christmas Magic festival will wrap up with a variety of events inside the Cherry Tree Centre, including:

  • Interactive dance sessions
  • Dance and Kung Fu demonstrations
  • Santa’s Silly Bingo
  • Storytime with Mrs Claus
  • Festive Elf workshops
  • Food, drink and Christmas market stalls

Quieter sessions of Storytime with Mrs Claus and the festive elf workshops are again planned between 11am – 12noon to allow SEND families to enjoy them during quieter hours.

A Community Celebration

The Christmas Magic event is funded by the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority through the city region’s UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF) allocation. It represents a collective effort by Equilibrium North West Family Hub, Liscard Together, the Cherry Tree Centre and Wirral Council to bring the Liscard community together through an uplifting, positive festive celebration.

Cllr Tony Jones, Chair of Wirral Council’s Economy, Regeneration & Housing Committee, said:

Bringing people together through events like this is crucial to both strengthening our communities and our high streets, and Liscard’s Christmas Magic looks set to be a brilliant start to the festive season.

I’d encourage people to head down and support our local businesses and community organisations, as well as enjoying the wide range of free family events on offer. There’s no better way to welcome in December than spending quality time with friends and family, especially with such a varied programme of activities.

Councillor Mike Wharton, Liverpool City Region Combined Authority Cabinet Member for Business, Investment and Trade, said:

This four-day programme of events has something for everyone and is the perfect way to get into the Christmas spirit.  Events like this are a really important way of supporting our local high streets and communities.  I’d encourage everyone to get down to Liscard this weekend and enjoy all the festive fun!

Sharon Munroe of Equilibrium North West said:

As we see this brilliant four-day event come to life, we’re so excited for the community to enjoy the wide range of activities on offer together.

Giving families a way to kickstart the Christmas season together and building community spirit and connections is what this event is all about. We can’t wait to welcome as many people in Liscard as possible to share in the spirit of Christmas, have a wonderful time and champion our local businesses at the same time.
