Cameras capturing details of motorists’ number plates will soon be operating near a Wallasey primary school to help make the journey to and from school safer for pupils.

An Automated Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) system has been installed at the entrance to Green Lane, at its junction with Greenleas Road, to support with the implementation of Wirral’s first School Street scheme covering Greenleas Primary School.

From February 24th when the school resumes after the half-term break, cameras will be monitoring and checking the number plates of vehicles that drive into the School Street during the hours of operation – which coincide with school drop off in the morning and pick-up in the afternoon.

If a vehicle has not been registered for an exemption – for example because it belongs to a resident or someone working in the area – the registered keeper may receive a Penalty Charge Notice (PCN).

In November 2021, Greenleas Primary School became the first School Street trial in Wirral. A School Street is a stretch of road outside a school that is temporarily closed to traffic during school drop-off and pick-up times.

This limits traffic in the road outside the school at key times and creates a mainly car free zone and encourages walking and wheeling on the journey to and from school. An Active Travel Officer, based within the council’s Road Safety Team supports the school community, promoting safe and active travel.

The School Street is in operation 8.30am to 9.30am and 2.30pm to 3.30pm during the school term. Only pedestrians, cyclists or motorists with an exemption will be able to access the School Street during these times.
