Parks fly the Green Flag once again

16 July 2026
Wirral's parks and green spaces have once again been recognised among the best in the North West

Wirral's parks and green spaces have once again been recognised among the best in the North West after achieving 33 Green Flag Award successes in 2026, more than any other local authority in the region.

The awards are the international quality mark for parks and green spaces and recognise places that are welcoming, safe and well cared for.

This year's success comes as the Green Flag Award scheme celebrates its 30th anniversary. Wirral's parks are among a record-breaking 2,391 sites across the UK to receive the award in 2026.

This year, Birkenhead Park, Hilbre Island Nature Reserve, Landican Cemetery and Wirral Country Park also achieved Green Heritage Site Accreditation in recognition of the way their historic features are cared for and promoted.

New Ferry Butterfly Park, managed by Cheshire Wildlife Trust, and Holy Cross church in Woodchurch, received Green Flag Community Awards.

The awards recognise the hard work of council staff, volunteers and community groups who help look after Wirral's parks and green spaces throughout the year.

We’re incredibly proud that so many of Wirral’s parks and green spaces have once again been recognised through the Green Flag Awards.

This achievement is a credit to the hard work and dedication of council staff, volunteers, community groups and partner organisations who help care for these spaces throughout the year.

Our parks and green spaces play an important role in people’s lives. They give residents places to relax, enjoy nature, stay active and spend time with family and friends.

I’d like to thank everyone involved in helping us achieve this success and ensuring Wirral continues to have some of the very best parks and green spaces in the country.

Cllr Max Booth, Chair of the Environment, Climate Emergency and Transport Committee

With public services under pressure, investing in parks is not a luxury, it’s a practical, preventative solution and one of the most visible ways to improve people’s quality of life.

Wirral have shown what can be achieved when parks are properly supported and managed. As we celebrate 30 years of the Green Flag Award, we want every community to have access to green spaces like this that are safe, welcoming and maintained to a high standard.
