Final call for Active Travel scheme feedback

Time is running out for residents to have their say on two current active travel schemes that are currently under review.

In 2020, changes were made to both Fender Lane in Moreton and New Chester Road, Birkenhead to provide a safe, dedicated space for cyclists alongside, but separated, from motorised traffic.

Closing on 9th December, the consultation process gives members of the public an opportunity to provide feedback on both schemes.

This local opinion, knowledge and insight will then be considered alongside the data on traffic flows and collisions - and design guidance from the Department for Transport (DfT) - by the Environment, Climate Emergency and Transport Committee for members to decide on the future of these two routes.

The committee may decide that no change is needed, they may decide that some improvements to how they operate are necessary to make them more effective. Or they may decide that the routes are not working and recommend that they are returned to how they were before 2020. Any changes to either or both schemes will require funding.

New Chester Road and Fender Lane, aren’t the only active travel schemes that you can have your say on – the recently launched Duke Street consultation also provides members of the public with a chance to provide their feedback on the proposals for one of Wirral’s main routes linking Birkenhead and Wallasey.

The proposals for Duke Street include the introduction of a new, signalised pedestrian crossing at the junction with Price Street in Birkenhead to improve safety and convenience for pedestrians and the installation of ‘wand orca’ bollards to segregate vehicles from cyclists along the existing cycle lanes on both sides of the road.
