From the 1 July 2025 Wirral Registration Service will be wholly based at Wallasey Town Hall.

After this date Birkenhead Town Hall will be closed for day-to-day operations to allow for repair works to take place.

This means no bookings are being taken for ceremonies at Birkenhead Town Hall after July 1.

All existing appointments for births, death, marriage registration will still go ahead as arranged at Birkenhead up to Thursday 29th May 2025 at 4pm.

Registrar services will be active from Wallasey Town Hall from June 3 and all future wedding bookings will take place there.

Wallasey Town Hall, and its surrounding area, is Grade II* listed and the building was constructed from sandstone between 1914 and 1916.

It is one of the most distinctive landmarks on the Wirral side of the Mersey, well known for its wide stone steps leading down towards the River Mersey with views across to the Three Graces in Liverpool.

Within the building, the entrance hall from Brighton Street is marble with a large traditional feature staircase with galleried landing, which makes it an ideal location for wedding photographs to be taken.

The changes follow a review in which the town hall was identified as the preferred location for council committee meetings.

The Grade II* listed building already has the Council’s Civic and Elections Service located there with council meetings being held within the town hall’s committee rooms and council chamber.

It is also hosting a One Stop Shop facility with bookable appointments one day a week. The One Stop Shop provides support and advice on many council services, including Housing Options Referrals, Housing Benefit/Council Tax, Blue Badges, Property Pool Plus, Streetscene/Bins and Emergency Financial Support/Foodbanks.
