Councillor Mary Jordan has been elected as the new Mayor of Wirral for the 2026–27 civic year.

She was formally appointed at the Council’s Annual General Meeting (Part 1), held at Wallasey Town Hall yesterday evening (Wednesday 13 May). She takes over from Councillor Brian Kenny who served as Mayor since 14 May 2025.

Councillor Jordan was first elected to Wirral Council in 2018 as a member for the Clatterbridge ward, which she continues to represent.

Educated at Wirral Grammar School for Girls, her career began at Unilever Research and Development. Alongside her work, she studied chemistry, physics and mathematics on a part-time basis.

After marrying in 1975, she settled in Eastham, where she became actively involved in local politics, including roles as both a candidate and association officer.

Later, when her only child, Adam, left for medical school, she returned to higher education, completing a master’s degree in health promotion, policy and research.

She went on to join the NHS as a Project Manager for Healthcare Scientists (Diagnostics) across Cheshire and Merseyside, later holding senior roles across a range of specialisms including renal services, critical care and dementia. She subsequently returned to research at The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre.

Her commitment to dementia care continues through her role as Dementia Champion for Wirral Council.

Before her appointment as Mayor, Cllr Jordan was a member of Wirral’s Council’s Planning Committee and Adult Social Care & Public Health Committee, and served as Chair of the Cheshire and Merseyside Integrated Care System Joint Health Scrutiny Committee.

As Chair of the Wirral Festival of Music, she is a strong advocate for the benefits of music in supporting mental health and wellbeing, as well as its role in developing confidence, discipline, teamwork and numeracy skills.

Mary is also a founder trustee of Incubabies, which is dedicated to improving neonatal intensive care provision at Arrowe Park Hospital.

For her mayoral year, Councillor Jordan has chosen to support The Paul Lavelle Foundation and Wirral Carers through the Mayor’s Special Charity Fund.

The Paul Lavelle Foundation works to raise awareness of male domestic abuse and supports male victims and survivors, while Wirral Carers brings together carers, volunteers and professionals to provide support across the borough. The Mayor’s Charity Fund will also make contributions to other local charities and voluntary groups at the end of the civic year.

It is a great honour to be appointed Mayor of Wirral. Having lived in the borough all my life, I am proud to serve our communities and to support the many organisations and volunteers who make such a positive difference locally. I am particularly pleased to be supporting The Paul Lavelle Foundation and Wirral Carers during my mayoral year, helping to raise awareness of the issues they address and raising funds for the vital work they do across Wirral.

At the same meeting, Councillor Mike Sullivan, who represents Pensby and Thingwall, was appointed as Deputy Mayor of Wirral and will be supported by his daughter, Dr Emily Sullivan, as Deputy Mayoress.
