Wirral prepared for Coronation celebrations

More than 70 roads have been granted permission to close this weekend as Wirral residents look to come together to celebrate the Coronation of King Charles III.

Wirral Council has waived the usual fees for enacting road closures to encourage neighbours to organise street parties over the course of the coming long weekend.

Parties are due to take place on Saturday, Sunday or Monday – with some streets stretching their celebrations over two days.

Every organiser who applied for a road closure has also been given advice on running their event safely and in line with regulations.

For the small number of streets who are having a party on Monday, but who also have a Monday bin collection scheduled, there is some additional advice to note.

Bin collections should be finished by 10am on Monday 8th May, so please don’t get the party started any earlier than that – and leave putting up bunting across the street until after crews have been, otherwise they might not be able to get down the street safely.

There is also guidance for anyone looking to prepare or serve food at their celebration. Easy-to-follow food safety tips can be found on the Food Standards Agency (FSA) website at https://bit.ly/3VsUlEa

Following the FSA’s four Cs - cleaning, chilling, cooking, avoiding cross-contamination - will help people prepare a safe feast for their friends and neighbours.

Mark Camborne, Assistant Director for Neighbourhood Safety and Transport, said:

As always, we have tried to make the process for applying for and getting permission to stage an event in your street as simple and painless as possible and we’re delighted we’ve been able to waive the usual fees again for this occasion.

But at any event that involves people gathering in public, there are things that organisers and those in attendance need to take responsibility for, so we’ve made sure these things have been communicated to ensure all the events taking place in Wirral over the weekend go off safely and incident-free. I hope everyone has a great Coronation weekend, whatever they have planned.
