Wirral Council Leader’s message: Homes for Ukraine Scheme
A statement from Cllr Janette Williamson, Leader of Wirral Council:
"As you know if you have seen any news reports the situation in Ukraine remains desperate. Many innocent people are being forced to flee their homes in fear of the disgraceful invasion from Russia which continues to target civilians, women, children, the elderly and even hospital and schools.
"I know many people have been getting in touch to ask if there is any way they can help support the people of Ukraine and many have already donated to the DEC fund (details here if you need them).
"The Secretary of State for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities, Rt Hon Michael Gove MP has now provided details of the Homes for Ukraine Scheme which will allow those in a position to do so to host Ukrainians fleeing for their lives.
"Already we know tens of thousands of people across the country have registered their willingness to accept into their homes Ukrainians fleeing the war in their country. Under the scheme announced by the Government each household housing a refugee will be offered £350 a month, tax free. They will not be expected to provide food and living expenses but can choose to offer this.
"Those who decide to sponsor a named person should get in contact with them directly and prepare to fill in a visa application. The visa application system will go live this Friday, 18 March.
"If you do not know anyone to sponsor but still want to help you can get in touch with charities, faith groups or local community organisations who are starting to make connections between individuals.
"To express an interest in taking part in the scheme go to www.gov.uk/homes-for-ukraine. You can find out more information here
"Finally I would like to thank everyone in Wirral who has been doing what they can to support and show solidarity with the people of Ukraine, showing the kindness and warmth of the people of this borough to those who face their darkest moments."
