Wirral History and Heritage Fair returns to Port Sunlight this weekend
One of the country’s leading History and Heritage fairs returns to Wirral this weekend – and this year’s event promises to be the biggest and most engaging yet.
More than 100 stalls will fill Port Sunlight’s historic Hulme Hall, offering visitors the chance to explore the history of where they live, discover their ancestors, browse memorabilia, share their own memories, and meet the volunteers who help preserve Wirral’s heritage.
Paul Smith, Chair of the Wirral History and Heritage Association (WHHA), said:
This year’s Fair promises to be the best yet with a wide mix of exhibitors providing something of interest for everyone, whether that is archaeology, memorabilia, family trees or all aspects of local history. We want to promote and encourage interest in and enjoyment of the Wirral Peninsula’s past and the preservation of our local heritage assets.
Entrance to the event is free so there are no barriers to exploring the huge variety of resources available to learn about the past, from archaeology to vintage transport, the Vikings to recent times and our many Conservation Areas.
The annual Fair is organised by WHHA with support from Wirral Council and showcases the region’s history, conservation areas, listed buildings, community archives and volunteer groups. Family history experts will be on hand for those wanting to start or deepen their research, and visitors can browse a range of new and second-hand local history books and memorabilia.
Wirral Council’s Heritage Champion, Councillor Jerry Williams, said:
The History and Heritage Fair is one of the highlights of Wirral’s cultural calendar. It brings together the groups, volunteers and enthusiasts who work tirelessly to protect, celebrate and share our borough’s remarkable story. It shows the length and breadth of the voluntary sector on Wirral and is a shining icon of good practice in the North West and far beyond.
Whether you’re a lifelong history lover or simply curious about the place you call home, this event is a fantastic chance to explore, learn and get involved.
Visitors can immerse themselves in displays of artefacts, archive photography and demonstrations, as well as find out about local societies, heritage walks, talks and tours taking place throughout the year.
The Wirral History and Heritage Association, established in 2009, is a voluntary organisation that also co‑ordinates the borough’s hugely popular Heritage Open Days each September.
The venue for this weekend’s event is Hulme Hall, which is just a five‑minute walk from Port Sunlight Station (please note the station does not have step‑free access).
