On 11th July 1995, Serbian Nationalist forces invaded the UN safe zone of Srebrenica and went on to kill 8,372 Muslim men and boys over the next few days.

To remember the innocent lives that were taken, 11 July is recognised around the world as Srebrenica Memorial Day.

In 2018 Wirral Council pledged to mark the anniversary of the genocide each year and to support efforts to tackle hatred and intolerance to help build a better, safer and more cohesive society for everyone.

Earlier this week, the Mayor of Wirral joined civic leaders from across the city region for a special service of remembrance. The tower at Wallasey town hall is illuminated green along with other buildings across the country, in commemoration.
