National Apprenticeship Week 2026 is a chance to celebrate the journeys people are taking into work and training. One of those journeys belongs to Robbie, who is building his skills and confidence as a Business Administration Apprentice in Wirral Council’s Children’s Services.

Robbie first joined Wirral Council in December 2024 through a Supported Internship. The programme helped him get to know the world of work, meet new people, and find out what he enjoyed. It also gave him a chance to learn skills at his own pace with support from the team.

Robbie said:

The supported internship programme has been very good in helping me develop skills and understand the work a lot better. My confidence has really improved, and I’ve learnt a lot of new media and IT skills.

In 2025, Robbie’s hard work paid off. He was offered a Business Administration Apprenticeship with Children’s Services, something he was really excited about:

I was really made up when I was offered the apprenticeship. I’m excited for the future.

Since starting the apprenticeship, Robbie has been getting involved in new tasks, learning how to adapt, and building even more confidence.

I’m definitely becoming much more flexible under pressure and also adapting my skills for various tasks within my role.

He’s also discovering more about himself and what he enjoys.

I gained a lot of self‑confidence within myself, as well as learning more about my skillset and what I am capable of.

Looking ahead, Robbie knows exactly where he hopes his journey will take him.

I would like to continue working permanently within the council and to develop a career in SEND services.

Robbie’s mentor, Annie Grady, has been supporting him throughout his journey. Annie had this to say:

Robbie has contributed so much to the team. It’s been a pleasure to see him grow in confidence and skills.

And for other young people thinking about an apprenticeship, Robbie has some simple advice:

My main advice to people starting an apprenticeship is to just enjoy the journey and also be yourself and learn new skills and parts about yourself.
