Foster Carers recognised for dedication, passion and commitment
Wirral foster carers came together for the annual Appreciation Event, celebrating the dedication, compassion and commitment of those who provide safe and nurturing homes for local children and young people.
Hosted at The Village Hotel in Bromborough, the event recognised foster carers who go above and beyond to support children in their care, while also thanking the wider fostering community for the life-changing difference they make every day.
The award winners represent the very best of fostering, but they also reflect the dedication, kindness and commitment shown by foster carers across our borough every day.
We are incredibly grateful for everything our foster carers do and proud to have them as part of Wirral's fostering community.
This event was a chance to thank them for their unwavering commitment and to celebrate the remarkable difference they make to children, young people and families across Wirral.
The awards ceremony was opened by Steven Smith, Head of Service for Children, Families and Education at Wirral Council, before Supervising Social Workers shared heartfelt nominations highlighting the dedication and impact of the carers being recognised. The award winners were:
Outstanding Contribution to Fostering - Nick Gibbons
Nick Gibbons received the award in recognition of his exceptional commitment to improving the lives of children and young people.
Whether providing care for children with complex needs, mentoring families through challenging times or supporting young people as an Appropriate Adult, Nick's dedication extends far beyond the role of a foster carer.
His patience, compassion and tireless advocacy have made him a trusted source of support for children, families and professionals alike.
Exceptional Service to Fostering - Rob Chidgey
For 30 years, Rob Chidgey has opened his home and heart to more than 100 children and young people, providing stability, encouragement and unwavering support when it was needed most.
Known for his compassion, resilience and commitment, Rob has always put the children in his care first, championing their needs and helping them to overcome challenges and fulfil their potential.
Many young people have remained part of Rob's life after leaving care, a testament to the lasting relationships and the extraordinary difference he has made.
Connected Carer of the Year - Neil Woods
Neil Woods was given the prize for the fantastic commitment he has shown in providing a loving and supportive home.
Neil has embraced every opportunity to learn and grow in his role, attending training, support groups and Mockingbird activities while working closely with professionals and family members to ensure his grandson receives the best possible care.
His dedication to building strong relationships, accepting support and putting his grandson's needs first has helped create a nurturing environment where both have flourished.
Mainstream Carers of the Year - Liz and Daz Keen
Since beginning their fostering journey in 2022, Liz and Daz have opened their home and hearts to children who need them most.
They have provided first-class care for babies and young children with complex health, developmental and emotional needs, often stepping forward to support emergency and unplanned placements.
Their commitment, resilience and child-centred approach have helped children thrive, make important developmental progress and move on successfully to their forever families.
Praised by professionals for the exceptional standard of care they provide, Liz and Daz consistently go above and beyond to create positive experiences, memories and opportunities for every child they welcome into their family.
We don't foster for any plaudits but it is nice to be appreciated for what we do.
The event was also an opportunity to thank Wirral's wider fostering community who collectively support children and young people across the borough.
Several local businesses and organisations' generous donations helped make the celebration possible.
