Wirral dedicates 4,000 trees to the Queen’s Green Canopy
More than 4,000 new trees have so far been planted in Wirral dedicated to the Queen’s Green Canopy initiative.
The Queen’s Green Canopy is a tree planting initiative created to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022 and invites groups, organisations and people across the UK to plant a tree during the official planting season between October to March.
In Wirral, the new trees are also helping the council to meet its target of 21,000 trees planted annually until 2030. With two months left of the current planting season, here’s a round-up of what the borough has achieved specifically for the Queen’s Green canopy initiative so far since November 2021.
We can celebrate:
- 4,000 trees planted
- 300 volunteer’s support
- 20 species of tree planted
- 6 dedicated planting events
His Honour John Roberts, Deputy Lieutenant and Merseyside Lead for the Queen's Green Canopy initiative, attended one of the plantings in Wirral and said: “As the person responsible for leading Merseyside’s response to this project I am delighted at the way in which so many organisations and individuals all over the county are supporting this initiative that thanks Her Majesty for Her leadership of the Nation over the last 70 years.
“In Wirral alone there have been individual plantings as well as community events. The result has been that trees numbering in the thousands have gone into the ground – a wonderful response.
“To all in Wirral, and on Merseyside generally, I say thank you and keep it up please. The project runs until the end of 2022 so there is still plenty of time to take part.”
The aim of the Queen’s Green Canopy initiative is that the trees planted will create a legacy in honour of The Queen’s leadership of the Nation and will go on to benefit future generations.
