What’s On in your community – climate edition

Whether you’re interested in planting trees, going on organised bike rides or getting crafty, there’s lots to get involved in within your local community while helping the environment as well.

Just a few of the things that you can get stuck into over the next few months have been included below. There really is something for everyone. 

Make it Happen and waste reduction projects

Make it Happen - Birkenhead are resuming two of their projects that help reduce waste. These will be held at the Place of Contribution, 34 Argyle Street, Birkenhead, CH41 6AE. The workshops include:

• Textiles As Treasure Sewing Sessions on alternate Thursdays, 12 - 2pm from – the next sessions are on 10 March, 24 March, 7 April, 21 April. Craft Sessions on alternate Tuesdays, 4 - 6pm – the next sessions are on 1 March, 15 March, 29 March, 12 April. Learn how to mend clothing and use donated fabric to create decorative items.

• Eco Bricks workshops Every Tuesday, 10am to 12pm Get involved with building an Eco Brick - a plastic bottle packed solid with clean and dry used plastic, such as bread bags, crisp packets or any other plastic packaging. They can be used to build items such as furniture, garden structures and playground equipment.

Wirral Environment Network and Prenton Community Garden Volunteering and Garden Workshop

The workshop will focus on 'How to Grow Hardy Annuals for Containers'. The first half of the workshop will be indoors, followed by a practical demo in the garden polytunnel.

Attend on 4 March, between 12.30pm and 3pm at Prenton Rugby Club, Prenton Dell Road, CH43 3BS.

Nature Hub for Men with Bee Wirral and Wirral Environment Network

Wirral Environment Network (WEN) are now working with Bee Wirral at their polytunnel and allotment plot in Landsdowne Place, off Arkle Road, in Bidston & St James.

The site is a nature hub for men’s groups to integrate, meet new people and learn new skills. They will also be enhancing the asset for the community, including the much-loved nature pond. There will be Wednesday workshops with Maria from WEN, Friday drop ins and further days subject to demand.

HYPE youth provider running cycle rides at three locations

Rides will be at a comfortable pace with friendly bike leaders. All sessions start at 12 or 1pm and will take place on:

• Mondays at Birkenhead Park Grand Entrance
• Wednesdays at Egremont Ferry
• Thursdays at Woodside Ferry

From March, HYPE will also be holding family cycle rides at the weekends.  

Community tree planting

Join the largest community tree planting event of the 2021/22 season and help plant 2,700 trees at Poulton Recreation Ground. There will be a variety of native deciduous trees planted including Oak, Beech, Sweet Chestnut and Crab Apple.

Take part on 12 March, 10am at Poulton Recreation Ground, Stanton Road, Bebington, CH63 3BA.

As there will be many trees to plant at this event, volunteers are asked to bring their own spade, if they can, and wrap up in warm waterproof clothing with gardening gloves.
