A Parking Strategy outlining how Wirral Council can support better management of traffic while also helping the local economy has been approved by councillors.

The Parking Strategy has a number of policies which will now be considered in detail in the coming months, ranging from electric vehicle charging to addressing nuisance parking.

It also includes reviewing the use of car parks, improving cycle parking and looking at parking charges.

Members of the Environment, Climate Emergency and Transport Committee agreed the Strategy at the meeting in Birkenhead town hall on December 5.

The Strategy aims to reflect changes to the kind of vehicles people use, the journeys they make, a potentially rising population and the local response to the climate emergency.

An effective parking strategy for the future is not just about car parks or spaces just for car parking, it is about having the right spaces, for the right form of transport in the right places to manage traffic in a way that supports the local economy, residents, businesses and the environment.

Public consultations have taken place where residents were asked to consider how the way people travel has changed and is likely to change in the future and how they think both parking policies and infrastructure should be adapted to meet these changing demands.

Cllr Paul Stuart, Leader of Wirral Council, said:

The Parking Strategy aims to enhance existing parking facilities and promote the safety and efficiency of traffic management to support businesses and communities throughout the borough.

By aligning with sustainable transportation trends, such as the growing demand for secure cycle parking and electric vehicle charging spaces, the strategy also aims to encourage using more eco-friendly modes of transport.

It's important to note that the strategy does not seek to discourage people from using cars. Instead, it focuses on improving the highway network to enhance safety and accessibility for all users, including those who prefer car usage. Additionally, the strategy considers local changes, such as new housing developments and economic growth plans, as the borough undergoes regeneration.

“This comprehensive approach means that Wirral has a clear strategy. However, specific proposals will be developed in the coming months and years, which will undergo further public consultation and be presented to the relevant committee for consideration by councillors.
