Wirral residents are being encouraged to start 2024 in a more sustainable and environmentally-friendly way by taking the Cool Wirral Climate Challenge 2024.

Throughout the new year people are being asked to take positive actions to reduce their personal and household carbon footprint. By completing the challenges, you also have the opportunity to be entered into a prize draw for Wirral Spend Independent cards – these give you access to exclusive offers and discounts at independent restaurants and business across Wirral for a whole year!

The challenges are all set out in the Cool Wirral calendar, which can be picked up at any Wirral library. Or it can be viewed or downloaded from this web page. This attractive calendar was designed by New Brighton-based company, Toucan Tango, and features Wirral landmarks in the illustrations.

The challenges in January and February are all about how people can reduce the carbon footprint of the food we eat. They include:

Challenge 1: Eat less meat
Challenge 2: Learn about composting and get a compost bin
Challenge 3: Try growing your own produce
Challenge 4: Eat local and seasonal produce

January’s challenge also coincides with Veganuary, a campaign to support people to try a vegan diet in January – maybe by just changing one meal a week. People can post their favourite veggie or vegan recipes on the ideas board on https://haveyoursay.wirral.gov.uk/climate-challenge to give others some inspiration!

Cllr Liz Grey, Chair of the Environment, Climate Emergency and Transport Committee, said: “These challenges are a great way to start the year as we all mean to go on – becoming more aware of the impacts of the things we do, on the environment.

“There are so many things that we can do to adapt our lifestyles to help reduce our carbon footprint. Getting involved in the year-long climate challenge can help you find out about just some of these changes that can make a positive impact, and you can join others around the borough who want to do the same.”

During the year, Wirral’s Climate Emergency team will be working with local community organisations to host workshops and events and post videos and articles to support people on their journey.
